Introduction of Light
Introduction
Light is a form of Radiant energy.
Emitted by excited atom which can cause sensation of vision.
The branch of Physics which deal with the phenomena concentrating light is called optics.
Newton suggested that light travel in straight line, but huygens suggested that light travel in the form wave.
Till today we are unable to clearly define the nature of light.
Some experiments perform on the basis of Newton's theory but can not be explained by huygens theory similarly some experiments perform on the basis of huygens theory but cannot be explained by Newton's theory.
Optics are broadly divided into two category
1. Geometrical Optics:
in which we study optics considering light to travel in straight line (particle nature)
2. Physical Optics :
In which we deal with the theory of wave to explain the phenomena of light.
Characteristic of light
1.Velocity 3 x 10^8 m/s
2. Rest mass is Zero.
3. Electromagnetic by nature.
4. Also called Photon.
5. Contain Energy and Momentum.
6. E =hf where h is plan's constant.
7 velocity v= wavelength x frequency.
